Remote work
Remote work is work carried out away from an employer's usual premises, often from an agreed home or other location.
A remote vacancy may still restrict where you can live or work, require overlap with particular hours, or include occasional travel. Ask for the eligible locations and attendance expectations before assuming you can work from another country. Equipment, internet access and a suitable place to work are also practical parts of the arrangement.
Employers and public bodies use the terminology differently. For United States federal employment, the Office of Personnel Management distinguishes remote work from telework arrangements that involve regular attendance at an agency workplace. That definition does not govern every employer's advert. Read the specific policy and employment terms. If you plan to move, ask whether the employer can continue employing you in the new location, and check the relevant work-permission requirements before making the change.
Example
An applicant in Portugal finds a remote role advertised by a German company. They ask whether the role can be performed from Portugal and under which employment arrangement.
What to check
- Confirm permitted working locations.
- Check working hours and required travel.
- Ask how moves and equipment are handled.
