Part-time employment

Part-time employment involves fewer working hours than the applicable full-time arrangement, with the schedule and rights depending on the job.

The hours might be spread across shorter days or fewer full days. Ask for the actual weekly hours and pattern, since part-time alone does not tell you whether evenings, weekends or changing shifts are involved. Also check whether the advertised salary is the amount you would receive or a full-time equivalent that will be reduced for your hours.

Definitions and entitlements vary by country. In Australia, Fair Work describes part-time employees as working fewer than 38 hours a week with hours that are usually regular. They receive many minimum entitlements proportionately, including annual and sick leave, although some entitlements are not reduced. Part-time also differs from casual employment under Australian rules. Elsewhere, use the local definition and the proposed contract to understand what the label means for your role.

Example

A vacancy quotes €40,000 full-time equivalent. Before applying for a three-day schedule, the candidate asks for the actual annual salary and contracted hours.

What to check

  • Confirm hours, days and schedule changes.
  • Check actual pay against full-time equivalent pay.
  • Review leave and benefit eligibility.
